Class trips to view ancient texts

“For Humanities, I took Reading Cultures. We were reading the Odyssey by Homer and my teacher took us to Special Collections to look at different versions of the texts we were reading. The oldest text I got to see was a second century CE papyrus fragment from the Iliad. My eyes just popped. I couldn’t believe I was with these primary sources—obviously it was in a glass case so I couldn’t touch it, but you were still there with it. I remember taking a picture and sending it to my family group chat and everyone was so excited.

These are those experiences where I say to myself, wow, I’m here at UChicago and I have these once in a lifetime opportunities.”
